Southern Fried Chicken

Southern Fried Chicken

Southern Fried Chicken is a classic dish in the US that features crispy and flavorful chicken pieces coated in a seasoned flour mixture and fried to a golden brown. The chicken is marinated in buttermilk to enhance its tenderness and flavor. It's a popular dish that is often served with traditional sides such as mashed potatoes and coleslaw.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk and chicken pieces, making sure each piece is coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  2. In another bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  3. In a deep frying pan or Dutch oven, heat 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F.
  4. Remove the chicken from the buttermilk and let the excess liquid drip off.
  5. Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour mixture, making sure it is completely coated.
  6. Carefully place the chicken in the hot oil, a few pieces at a time, and fry until golden brown and cooked through, about 12-15 minutes for dark meat and 8-10 minutes for white meat.
  7. Remove the chicken from the oil with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes and coleslaw.
